About the actual Type 9 Single-Seat Fighter
The Type 9 Single-Seat Fighter is the ancestor of the Type 96 Carrier-Based Fighter, which was the main fighter aircraft of the Navy before the adoption of the Zero Fighter. Designed by Jiro Horikoshi in response to the demand for a modern, high-speed aircraft, this was the Navy's first all-metal monoplane, incorporating many innovative ideas that would later lead to the Zero Fighter, and the first prototype had a distinctive form with inverted gull wings.
