About the 120mm Mortar RT w/Heavy Mortar Towing Vehicle
Mortars are weapons that, compared to conventional artillery, sacrifice range to simplify and lighten their mechanisms, enabling operation by a small number of personnel. However, even heavy mortars in the 120mm caliber class, which appeared in the late 1980s, can be towed by small vehicles, demonstrating high mobility. In recent years, howitzers of the same class have been replaced by heavy mortars, demonstrating the usefulness of this weapon. The 120mm Mortar RT equipped by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force is a licensed production in Japan of a French-developed model, adopted in 1992, and mainly operated by heavy mortar companies of infantry regiments. The gun is equipped with wheels and is towed by a "heavy mortar towing vehicle," which is a high-mobility vehicle with special specifications.
