■Product Description
The Savanna was released in Japan in 1971 as a car exclusively equipped with a rotary engine (RE). The RX-3 in the Hot Wheels product name is the name of the export model, but in Japan, the first-generation Savanna is often also called the RX-3. Unlike a reciprocating engine that produces power through the up-and-down motion of a normal piston, the RE produces power through the rotational motion of a uniquely shaped piston called a triangular rotor, and its driving feel is often likened to that of an "electric motor." Although RE-equipped cars are no longer commercially available, Mazda was the only company that fully commercialized and put it into practical use, so many car enthusiasts consider it one of Mazda's identities. Hot Wheels has taken the racing version of the RX-3 as its motif and arranged it into a tall, slender version inspired by the deformed plastic models that were popular in Japan in the 1980s.
